West Canadian

Environmental & Social

West Canadian strongly believes in taking action in reducing carbon footprints.  Our people take pride in knowing that our building was constructed with the well being of the environment in mind and so can you.  Here are some ecological facts about our building:

  • Green Roof: The building is equipped with a natural grass rooftop which offers numerous benefits including: recovery of green space, moderation of the urban heat island effect, improved storm water management, and a reduction in energy consumption.  The green roof will also absorb air pollution, collect airborne particles, and store carbon.  This initiative is one of the first in Calgary of its kind.
  • Wind Energy: The West Canadian building is partially powered by wind energy.
  • Eco-friendly air conditioning and heating: These systems are high efficiency and run off recycled water.
  • Low wattage light bulbs: These bulbs are used throughout the building and reduce energy consumption and carbon output.
  • Concrete: The concrete used in our building is supplemented with 25% fly ash; a material that in some cases would be discarded in a landfill.  Use of this material in concrete production consumes less energy while also improving efficiency and building performance.
  • Eco-friendly paint: All walls painted with products meeting environmental standards.
  • High efficiency glass windows: Installed throughout the building with high performance thermal glazing reducing overall energy use.
